Welcome! Tally ho!

Our B.V.I. Adventure is designed to give our family, friends and any other interested followers a look into the life of two expatriates making their way on the island of Tortola. Tortola is the largest island in the British Virgin Islands.

So, why did we move 2,000 miles away from our home in Knoxville, Tennessee? Michael accepted a position as the director of retail and international sales for a Caribbean clothing brand.

Cheers!

Day 81: All in a day's work

Travis thought he was coming down here for vacation, but Michael ended up putting him to work!

If you've checked out some of my previous posts from Travis's trip, you know what a talented photographer he is.  Just look at this shot he took of Marina Cay:

This is where we spent our Thursday afternoon, and that set of stairs there in the foreground turned out to be our "set."  Travis was so kind to photograph some items of Pusser's clothing for Michael.  Here he is in action:
And more impressive - here are some photos of his work.  Thanks T!

{Pusser's Regatta Shirt}

{Pusser's Tropical Polo}

{Caribbean Khaki Tag}

{Caribbean Khaki Crew Shorts}

I am loving these photos - there are so many great ones!!!  I'll have to do a follow-up post once these photos make their way onto Pusser's collateral materials.

Day 80: Can you take me high enough?

If you're now humming the Damn Yankees song from the early 90's, my apologies.  It's most definitely stuck in my head!  Well, on Wednesday Travis and I went "high enough" to the highest point in all of the BVIs...on top of Sage Mountain: elevation 1,716 feet.

We took the North trail to the fig tree, which marks the boundary of the trail.

It's approximately a mile to the fig tree and a mile back.  For our return, we took the center trail to the highest point in the BVI.  Check out this photo that Travis took from one of the look-outs:

It was really beautiful up there and almost chilly when you weren't protected by the trees and brush.  We only saw two snakes - well, I saw one and Travis saw another, but after my loud scream at the sight of the first one, he decided to keep the second sighting to himself.  Ha!

The Damn Yankees may say that "yesterday is just a memory," but I have a feeling my muscles are going to more than remember this hike...

Day 79: GIANT Jenga

Check out T's game face!

After such an intense day on the White Squall 2, we took it easy on Tuesday.  I worked in the morning, then we headed into town to grab a late lunch and relax by the pool at Nanny Cay.   Michael joined us for sunset and a friendly game of GIANT Jenga.  {Full disclosure: I lost.}  Oh, and it hurts when these 2X4s come crashing down to the ground...especially when you're wearing flip flops!  Yikes!

Day 78: White Squall 2

Monday was a holiday here in the BVI.  March 1 is H. Lavity Stoutt's birthday, although I read somewhere that the actual date of his birthday is the 7th.  Anyway, Stoutt was the first and longest serving Chief Minister of the BVI and everyone here has the day off, including Michael!

Since Travis is in town, I took a vacation day as well and we were off to board the White Squall 2.

The White Squall 2 is an 80 foot schooner.  And as you can see in the photo below, we didn't have enough wind to put up the sails.  There were about 20 of us on board, including our captain and crew.  (Shoutout to Mark, Chris and Lynn!)

Our first stop was The Baths on Virgin Gorda.  Michael and I hadn't been back since Christmas when we went with my parents.  Here's a shot I snapped from the boat, before taking a dinghy ashore.

After an invigorating hike through the caves and a refreshing swim, we enjoyed a delicious lunch on the White Squall. Then we headed for Cooper Island.  We had not been to Cooper yet, so we were excited to check it out.  We snorkeled around the reef at Cistern Point - it was amazing!  We saw so many beautiful fish and for the first time, bright red coral!

It was a wonderful day on the White Squall 2.  We highly recommend it and plan to take friends on future visits.

Day 77: Full Moon Party

We took Travis to the Full Moon Party on Sunday night.  And what a night it was!  We started things off at Pusser's East, where we sat on the porch and enjoyed some delicous grouper.  (Thanks Jeff!)

Travis is an incredible photographer as you will quickly realize.  Check out this photo he took of the full moon...

I just love the reflections in this photo.  We're just getting started though!  It was a photographer's paradise at Trellis Bay.  Here are some of my favorite shots that Travis took:

The fire throwers were absolutely mesmorizing!  Particularly, this guy...

The even did a flaming jump rope!  I was worried the guy jumping in from the right side there was going to get burned...he didn't, thankfully.

There was a live band playing that night, so the flame throwers were also flame dancers!

And the last one:

What an incredible night!  Big day tomorrow though...we are getting up early and heading out on the White Squall 2 - a day sail to the Baths and Cooper Island.

Day 76: Travis's Arrival

Travis, my friend and coworker from Ackermann, made it to the BVI in spite of the hundreds of cancelled flights.  Take that, snow storm!  This is T's first visit to the Caribbean and we have a lot of fun things planned for him!  Whoo hoo!!!

Unfortunately, the battery in our camera died before Travis arrived, so the photo taken with a camera phone is a little dark.  We thought about going back to the airport and re-enacting the whole thing!  Ha!

We went to the house, dropped off his luggage and headed into Road Town.  We enjoyed a late dinner at Bar Fly (which is connected to The Dove, one of our favorite restaurants on the island.)  It was really good and there was a great crowd.

Tomorrow night is a full moon and that means one thing!  Full Moon Party!  We haven't been to one since New Year's Eve...

Day 72: Work it out!

After two-plus months of relying on swimming for our exercise, we joined the Tortola Sports Club on day 72!   {Apparently it doesn't count as "exercise" when you're drinking a bushwhacker or other alcoholic beverage.}

We were given two options, the Tennis membership or the Squash membership.  You can see from the photo below, which ones these expats went with...

They have a regular work-out facility there with treadmills, weights, and such, along with a bar and grill.  We hear the restaurant is quite good - it overlooks the tennis courts though, so you better be on your game!
